Is my dog Protective or Aggressive?

A very common and important question from dog owners!

The difference between protectiveness and aggression often comes down to the dog's intent, situational context, owner's level of control and relationship with your dog.

Does Your dog frequently

  • Lunge

  • Snap

  • Spin & Backing up while

  • Barking high pitched

especially when unprovoked, it can be considered an Aggressive issue!

Most Dogs the intention is to alert, deter a perceived threat, or establish distance.

When most dogs bark or lunge, their goal is to keep a person or another dog away!

They rarely have the desire to bite! Their body language might include raised hair, ears pulled back, a body poised to retreat, high-pitched barking, and avoiding eye contact.

A true protective dog would be Alert, stiff, stand his ground, not backing up, focused gaze with a deep bark if any bark at all, but will still respond to commands. A protective dog will often alert you and then wait for your cue or be guided by your presence. An aggressively protective dog may ignore your input and take the situation into its own hands.
